Kidney Transplant
Half & Half - Alive Together
Service Description
A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure to place a healthy kidney from a living or deceased donor into a person whose kidneys no longer function properly. When your kidneys lose this filtering ability, harmful levels of fluid and waste accumulate in your body, which can raise your blood pressure and result in kidney failure (end-stage kidney disease). Some conditions which may lead to ESRD are diabetic nephropathy, polycystic kidney disease, glomerulonephritis, and lupus nephritis. Kidney donors should be above the age of 18 and should be free from diseases that could damage the kidney. Kidney donors may be alive or deceased. Another important criterion in kidney transplants is kidney matching. There are three main tests to find out whether the kidney match is perfect. They are blood typing, tissue typing, and cross-matching. About 30 out of 100 patients with kidney failure can have a kidney transplant. The first step is to consult with one of our doctors to see if you are a transplant candidate. Our dialysis experts will be involved in the procedure if you are on dialysis.
